SunniPath’s new Curriculum

We are excited to announce our new curriculum!

The curriculum will be fully launched this Fall. In the meantime, take a look at the following preview. And please note that you don’t need to wait until Fall to get started—courses that you take this Summer (or have taken previously) will all count towards the programs you are interested in participating in.

Based on our heritage and legacy—the Muslim scholarly tradition—our curriculum represents centuries of scholarship, expertise, rigor, and intelligence. It takes students with no knowledge of the religious sciences or Arabic and plugs them directly into this tradition, and students can either just learn the personally obligatory basics or continue on to study texts in their original Arabic.

Our curriculum was developed under the review and approval of several institutions and scholars in the Muslim World, including the Grand Mufti of Jordan Shaykh Nuh Ali Salman, WISE International Institute in Jordan, Mahd al-Fath in Syria, and Al-Ahqaf University in Yemen.

An enquiry into the status of the Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Isles

An enquiry into the status of the Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Isles

What was the status of the Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Isles? Evidentially there is no definitive answer to this and my Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Islestentative conclusions are provisional as I do not have the immediate means to get to the bottom of what most would probably regard as an “historical footnote”.

The office has only had one incumbent: Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam (1856-1932). The Ottoman caliph, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, granted Quilliam the position in 1894 and Quilliam effectively had to relinquish the post when he left Britain in 1908 and could only return a few years later pseudononymously. (Yaqub Zaki dates Quilliam’s return as early as 1910. [1]) This probably means that we have to distinguish between how the Ottomans saw the role and how Quilliam himself viewed it.

What is love? – Dhu’n Nun al-Masri explains what it means to love Allah

Dhu’l Nun al-Masri was asked about love. He responded,

“It is to love that which Allah loves,

to hate that which Allah hates,

to perform all good,

to reject everything that busies you from Allah,

and not to fear any blame for the sake of Allah,

while being gentle with believers, stern with disbelievers,

and
to follow the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace)
in matters of religion.” [Abu Nu`aym, Hilyat al-Awliya’, 9.394]

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani

Asking Questions

As for the Messenger of Allah (SAAS), he used to do wudu’ (ablution) while the Companions would see him. They would then copy him without being explained by him that this is a rukn and that is an adab. And when he (SAAS) used to pray they would see him and pray as they had seen him praying. (Similarly) when he performed hajj, people saw him and did as they saw him doing.

This was his (SAAS)’s general practice. He did not explain that obligation (furud) of wudu were six or four. Neither did he prescribe that if a man performs wudu without observing muwalat (1)(continuity) judgement would be made on the validity or invalidity of his wudu. On some occasions, however, he used to explain such things.

The Miswaak

Make a regular practice of the Miswaak, for verily, it is healthy for the mouth and it is a Pleasure for the Creator (i.e. Allah is pleased with the Muslim who uses the Miswaak)’.(BUKHARI)

THE MISWAAK
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) laid great stress on the use of the Miswaak (a tree-twig used for cleansing the teeth). One of the Sunnats of Wudhu is to use a Miswaak. Wherever a Miswaak is available and is not used, the full beauty and complete Sawaab of the Wudhu is not realised. There are numerous benefits and advantages in using a Miswaak.

HISTORY OF THE MISWAAK
The Miswaak, a tree-twig, was in use for brushing and cleansing the teeth long before the advent of our Holy Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). In fact the records of our Nabi Muhummad’s (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) Ahadith indicate that the Miswaak was the “Sunnah” or practice of all the Ambiyaa (Prophets of Allah)—Peace be upon them.

The beautiful ways of Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

In the last Live Session for Living Islam Shaykh Faraz narrated the following :

One of the duas that the Prophet [Allah bless him and give him peace] taught Sayidina Mu`adh ibn Jabal [may Allah be well pleased with him] was, “O Mu`adh by Allah I love you and I counsel you O Mu`adh do not leave saying after each prayer `O Allah assist me in remembering you and to be thankful to you and to worship you most beautifully’ “.

Prayer: The Essence of Worship

In Islam, prayer is a fundamental aspect of the believer’s religious life. The Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, mentioned in this regard, “Prayer is the essence of worship.”

Prayer lies at the heart of the believer’s relationship with God. It is viewed as an acknowledgement of God’s divinity (ilahiyya), and His mastery over His creation (rububiyya), in the sense that He has the ability to answer His servants.

In Islam, prayer assumes four basic forms: the formulaic prayer (Salat)(Du’a); supplication (Dhikr); and communion (Munajat).
