“My Lord increase me in knowledge.” – Surah Taha

Damascus

My fondest scenes of Syria are of watching the Hadra Sunday nights after Isha from the balcony of Masjid al Warid al Kabir(which stands at the end of a maze consisting of some of the narrowest alleys in the world) and watching all the great men of Allah of this fair city, led by Sheikh Abdur Rahman, taking those present, to the presence of their Lord.

Fasting During Rajab

Historically, one of the virtuous religious practices of Muslims is voluntary fasting during the month of Rajab. Unfortunately, there are a growing number of Muslims that consider this practice a blameworthy innovation. The following discussion, taken from Lata’if al Ma’rif fi ma li Mawasim al-‘Amm min al-Wadha’if (The Subtleties of Knowledge Concerning the Religious Duties Associated with Each Month of the Year), by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, helps to shed light on this increasingly contentious issue.

On Reciting the Quran

You must have a wird of recitation of the Mighty Book to be read every day. The least you should do is read on juz’ [one thirtieth of the Qur'an] so that you complete it once a month, and the most is to complete it every three days.

Know that great merit attaches to reciting the Qur’an, and an influence in illuminating the heart. The Messenger of God, may blessings and peace be upon him, has said: ‘The best of my nation’s devotions is the recitation of Qur’an.’ And `Ali, may God ennoble his face, has said: ‘The one who recites the Qur’an while standing in prayer recieves one hundred rewards for each letter; the one who recites it outside the prayer but in a state of ritual purity receives twenty-five rewards for each letter; and the one who recites it without ritual purity receives ten rewards for each letter.’

Beware of concentrating, while reciting, on a large amount to the exclusion of reflection and correct recitation. You must reflect and comprehend while you recite; slow, melodious recitation will assist you in this.

The Handsome Eyes of Our Beloved Mustafa (May Allah give him peace & blessings)

In the following piece of work, I have given a detailed description of the gorgeous eyes of our Noble Prophet Muhammad (May Allah give him peace & blessings) that were described by many of his companions, and I have explained the Arabic terms used in Arabic to describe them:

1. The beautiful eyes were “wide” and “large” described as [1]“عظيمُ العَينَيْن” and [2]“كانتْ عَينَاهُ نَجْلَاوَين”.

2. The Iris was “extremely black” described as [3]“أدْعَجُ العَين” and [4] “أسودُ الحَدَقًة” however the former more precisely means “a large eye with a dark black Iris having an extremely white sclera” “أدعج العين شديد سواد حدقتهما لكن قيد مع سعة العين وشدة بياضهما”.[5]

3. The sclera -white part of the eye- had a touch of redness in it described as [6]“أشْكًلُ العَيْن”, [7]“مُشرّبُ العَينِ بِحُمْرَة” and “كانَ فِي عَينَيْهِ تَمَزُّجٌ من حُمْرَة”.

Shu`ba once asked Simak about the meaning of “أشْكًلُ العَيْن” to which he said: “an eye that has a long eyelashes”. Qadhi `Iyyadh commented: this is a misapprehension (wahm) by Simak and the sound view is that the word “شَكلًة” in Arabic means to have a complexion of redness in the eye as the entire scholars have agreed to and this is what the entire scholars of the science of unusual Arabic literary (al-Gharib) have concurred on. The word “شَهلَة” is used to describe a touch of redness in the Iris. Redness in the eye is a praiseworthy attribute and a handsome quality according to the Arabs.[8]

Hafiz al-`Iraqi considered this redness one of the signs of the Prophethood. When the Noble Prophet travelled with Maysara to Basra, Rahib questioned him whether he had some redness in his eyes, upon knowing, he affirmed that he is the promised Messenger.[9]

Habib Ali on Increasing Presence in Prayer

The first thing one should do is to remember that this is an appointment between the lover and the beloved. Those who truly love Allah should rush to this. It is the Maraj of the soul. Also consider this. If you are invited to the office of a high level official or wealthy person and you had some problems, they will help solve your problems. Allah is the highest and wealthiest. Reflect deeply upon this. Also pray with love and during the times that are most beloved, not the times that are disliked. Love and dislike should not come together.

Have presence in ritual purification. Wudu is seeking permission to enter into the divine presence.

Enter the prayer with awe. You are standing before the divine. Do not think of the prayer as a debt that needs to be taken care of. Observe the stories of newly weds and how much they love being with each other. That is the attitude we should have in prayer.

May Allah allow this wisdom to enter into our hearts so that we may practice it.
