In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Ibn Ata’illah al-Iskandari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
People praise you for what they imagine you are, so be sure that you blame yourself for what you know you are.
Ibn `Abbad al-Rundi commented:
For a servant to blame himself and look at himself with disgust for the faults and defects that he knows he possesses is something that is sought from him because it helps him avoid having delusions about himself, which, in turn, allows him to improve his good deeds and his spiritual states. If he doesn’t look at himself in this manner, people’s praise will cause his deeds and states to wither away.
…
One of them said, “Whoever rejoices when others praise him has allowed Shaytan to come into him.” Another said, “If someone tells you, ‘What a wonderful person you are!’ and you love this more than for them to tell you, ‘What an awful person you are!, then by Allah, what an awful person you are!”
Reading Book S of the Reliance of the Traveller can be a wake-up call from similar delusions. I have heard Shaykh Nuh (may Allah preserve him) say that it is personally obligatory on every Muslim to learn the knowledge contained in Books P, Q, R and S of the Reliance.

Historically, one of the virtuous religious practices of Muslims is voluntary fasting during the month of Rajab. Unfortunately, there are a growing number of Muslims that consider this practice a blameworthy innovation. The following discussion, taken from Lata’if al Ma’rif fi ma li Mawasim al-‘Amm min al-Wadha’if (The Subtleties of Knowledge Concerning the Religious Duties Associated with Each Month of the Year), by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, helps to shed light on this increasingly contentious issue.

The first thing one should do is to remember that this is an appointment between the lover and the beloved. Those who truly love Allah should rush to this. It is the Maraj of the soul. Also consider this. If you are invited to the office of a high level official or wealthy person and you had some problems, they will help solve your problems. Allah is the highest and wealthiest. Reflect deeply upon this. Also pray with love and during the times that are most beloved, not the times that are disliked. Love and dislike should not come together.
Have presence in ritual purification. Wudu is seeking permission to enter into the divine presence.
Enter the prayer with awe. You are standing before the divine. Do not think of the prayer as a debt that needs to be taken care of. Observe the stories of newly weds and how much they love being with each other. That is the attitude we should have in prayer.
May Allah allow this wisdom to enter into our hearts so that we may practice it.

“Be strong everyday. Try to stop and think at all the difficult points/steps because they all matter, even the small ones. And if you can remember to be strong, compassionate, and do the right thing— remembering what is truly important— then hopefully it will come naturally when the big stuff hits. Try to remind yourself daily that you are never alone, that God is watching & that is not a scary thing, it is a blessing and we are all going to be okay. Great things, great love is waiting in God’s plan for the future… and there is great joy/happiness buried somewhere every day if you keep your eyes open and your heart/mind clear of distractions. Don’t stop giving because returns don’t matter. To give is never fruitless, just try to start giving without ever expecting a return (I must do this in front of my children so it comes naturally to them). Try to recognize when selfishness is clouding your vision, and push it away so you can admit your mistakes and learn from them.” – Tovah

Know that fasting contains a distinctive characteristic not found elsewhere. It is being ascribed to Allah Mighty and Majestic, where He Transcendent Is He says, “Fasting is Mine, and I give reward for it”. This ascription suffices as honor, just as the Ka`ba is ascribed to Allah Most High when He says, “And purify My house” (al-Hajj, 26).Fasting has superiority because of two concepts. The first is that fasting is a secret and an internal action that no one sees, so showing-off does not enter it.
