“My Lord increase me in knowledge.” – Surah Taha

Praise Leads to Delusion

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Ibn Ata’illah al-Iskandari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

People praise you for what they imagine you are, so be sure that you blame yourself for what you know you are.

Ibn `Abbad al-Rundi commented:

For a servant to blame himself and look at himself with disgust for the faults and defects that he knows he possesses is something that is sought from him because it helps him avoid having delusions about himself, which, in turn, allows him to improve his good deeds and his spiritual states. If he doesn’t look at himself in this manner, people’s praise will cause his deeds and states to wither away.

One of them said, “Whoever rejoices when others praise him has allowed Shaytan to come into him.” Another said, “If someone tells you, ‘What a wonderful person you are!’ and you love this more than for them to tell you, ‘What an awful person you are!, then by Allah, what an awful person you are!”

Reading Book S of the Reliance of the Traveller can be a wake-up call from similar delusions. I have heard Shaykh Nuh (may Allah preserve him) say that it is personally obligatory on every Muslim to learn the knowledge contained in Books P, Q, R and S of the Reliance.

HAJJ: Merits and Precepts

Bismillah-hi-Al-Rahman-Al-Raheem

Nahmaduhu Wanusale Alaa Rasulihil Kareem

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

We praise Him and solicit blessings for His noble Messenger. Hundreds of Ulama have written a large number of books on the precepts of Hajj in different languages at different times. Some of them are very detailed while some are brief. The Purpose of this small treatise is only to give an account of the necessary dictates for Hajj in easy language with easy classification. These dictates have been derived from the same detailed books to which necessary reference have mostly been made. In edition to the generally referred books on ‘Hadith’ and ‘Fiqh’ , the sources of this treatise are as follows :-

1. Manasik by Mulla ‘Ali Qari.

2. Ghunyat-un-Nasik.

Question on the Final Salaams of the Prayer

One of the great masters of Islamic spirituality, Ibn `Ajiba, raised a similar question: giving salams is only legislated when meeting someone after being absent from them. One does not, for example, give salams to someone who has been in the room with one for the past hour. Why, then, does one close one’s prayer by giving salams to those around one, regardless of whether they are present or absent, and regardless of whether they were already in the room when one began one’s prayer?

He answered this question as follows,

It is as though one was absent [h: during one's prayer] in the divine presence. Thus, when one comes out of the prayer, it is as though one has returned after being absent [h: from everything in the universe], and one therefore gives salams to people. [4]

May Allah Most High infuse our prayers with His love and reverence. Ameen. And Allah Most High knows best.

Hamza.

Subhanallah.

SunniPath’s new Curriculum

We are excited to announce our new curriculum!

The curriculum will be fully launched this Fall. In the meantime, take a look at the following preview. And please note that you don’t need to wait until Fall to get started—courses that you take this Summer (or have taken previously) will all count towards the programs you are interested in participating in.

Based on our heritage and legacy—the Muslim scholarly tradition—our curriculum represents centuries of scholarship, expertise, rigor, and intelligence. It takes students with no knowledge of the religious sciences or Arabic and plugs them directly into this tradition, and students can either just learn the personally obligatory basics or continue on to study texts in their original Arabic.

Our curriculum was developed under the review and approval of several institutions and scholars in the Muslim World, including the Grand Mufti of Jordan Shaykh Nuh Ali Salman, WISE International Institute in Jordan, Mahd al-Fath in Syria, and Al-Ahqaf University in Yemen.

Where ignorant armies clash by night

If one surfs Muslim forums, whether Sunni or otherwise, there is a startling reality: forgotten priorities.

We find armies of ignorant people clashing in the darkness of ignorance about matters they don’t understand, matters that the great imams of Islam differed upon with decorum.

Such argument and dispute is highly reprehensible. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

“No people went astray after having been given guidance except after they started argumentation.” [Tirmidhi and Ibn Maja, from Abu Umama (Allah be pleased with him)]

What is the difference between being cheap and being economic or not wasteful?

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,Abu Sa`id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,”Two traits are not found together in a believer: miserliness and bad character.” [Tirmidhi]

The Hadra: Is the group dhikr with singing of poetry and rhythmic swaying permitted?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & CompassionateYes, the hadra is in itself permitted, as writings of major Hanafi authorities make clear.

Among the imams of the Hanafi school who have specifically permitted it are Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Kamal Basha, Imam Shurunbulali, Sayyidi Abd al-Ghani al-Nablusi, `Allama Abd al-Qadir `Isa—who cites proofs for it from the major Hanafi reference works, including Ibn Abidin—and Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi in his Imdad al-Fatawa (5.151).

The Book Of Fasting, Its Secrets, Its Tasks And What Is Associated With It

Know that fasting contains a distinctive characteristic not found elsewhere. It is being ascribed to Allah Mighty and Majestic, where He Transcendent Is He says, “Fasting is Mine, and I give reward for it”. This ascription suffices as honor, just as the Ka`ba is ascribed to Allah Most High when He says, “And purify My house” (al-Hajj, 26).Fasting has superiority because of two concepts. The first is that fasting is a secret and an internal action that no one sees, so showing-off does not enter it.
